For two consecutive years (2017- 2018), Grieve Gillett Architects and JamFactory worked collaboratively to design and construct a temporary bar and exhibition installation at various locations in Adelaide for their annual Drink Dine Design Award.

Following the success of the projects, we worked on the exhibition design and display system for the 2019 Tarnanthi Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Art at JamFactory. Our brief was to create a consistent design language across four distinct exhibition spaces showcasing contemporary indigenous artists originating from Northern Territory, New South Wales and APY Lands in South Australia.

The result was a series of flexible, geometric plinths signifying land forms and escarpments, which displayed varying forms of ceramics, large scale metal sculptures, glass blown vessels and jewellery. A select gradation of Eucalyptus green greys was used to paint the walls and plinths, and each space featuring a changing ‘horizon’ line corresponding to the landscape of each artists’ homeland - salt/fresh water, forest and desert ground. The selection of dark paint colours created an immersive experience for Festival visitors, and enabled the artists and their artworks to shine.
