Mount Gambier Prison Main Works Package 2 involves the delivery of a suite of buildings which provide education, medical, communication and employment services to the additional 160 beds delivered in Main Works Stage 1.
The works consist of the refurbishment of the existing administration building into a new visit centre, the refurbishment of the existing visit centre into a new medical centre and video conference suites, extension of the existing woodwork and metalwork industries buildings, and the construction of a new purpose-built education building.
The existing analogue electronic security system has also been upgraded to digital, to bring the prison operations up to standard with other modern prisons.
As the construction works, mostly occurred within the operational prison compound, careful planning of the construction zones, sequencing of the works and movement to and from the sites was critical.
The materials and construction methodology were also carefully selected to make best use of the resources and skills available in this region.
