Mount Gambier Prison is a medium security prison, which currently had a 493-bed capacity and is run by a private prison operator.
Following the completion of Separable Portion 1 of the Early Works Package, the Main Works Package 1 delivers five two-storey Independent Accommodation Units providing an additional 112 beds, a Support Building containing Officers Station, Staff Facilities, Interview Rooms, Video Conference Suites, Indoor Gymnasium, Kiosks, Library Program & Education Rooms and an Indoor Basketball Court.
The five accommodation buildings are positioned to provide direct line of sight from a single central officers station, therefore reducing operational costs. The layout of the Support Building also assists with efficient management by locating rooms with similar functions in groups, which are all accessible from a central spine/corridor.
Most of the construction works have taken place on the greenfield site located on the western side of the existing prison compound. The sequence of works was carefully planned to provide seamless integration with the existing working prison.
As the project is delivered in three packages, interface between each package contracted to different builders had to be carefully considered. The materials and construction methodology were also carefully selected to make best use of the
resources and skills available in this region.
