Totalspace Design were engaged to refurbish a block of 1970’s Junior Primary classrooms at Lockleys North Primary School.

The refurbishment of the Mellor Building included updates to six general learning areas for Reception to Year 2 students, a central breakout space and multimedia and study rooms.

Having a high level of connection between the building and its location on the site was at the core of the design. This was addressed through incorporation of large sliding doors that open out onto new outdoor decks and play spaces, allowing for indoor-outdoor learning.

Clever use of the existing built form into the furniture design and layouts created interesting and fun learning areas that cater for different styles of learning and teaching.

A fresh materials palette with subtle pops of colour was chosen to create a calming and serene learning environment. Durable and forgiving, this neutral backdrop will allow teachers and generations of future learners to make it their own.
