As part of the greater site development of Seppeltsfield Winery in the Barossa Valley, Grieve Gillett Architects was approached to design the conversion of the original stables building to house the first regional satellite facility for the JamFactory Arts Centre.

The original stone stable building, once home to a shearing shed, coach house, tractor shed, warehouse and cooperage, now accommodates a large flexible gallery, artists studio’s and retail area.

Salvaged materials were used extensively for the interior finishes. Reclaimed 2.4 metre x 1.2 metre Mintaro slate slabs, formerly used in open ferment wine tanks are, repurposed as studio flooring. Redundant port vats and hardwood cellar staves were are also used as integral elements of the fitout.

The project is a true collaboration between architect, client, builder and tenant with significant steel fabrication undertaken by the on-site winery welder, restoration and conversion of the port vats completed by the winery cooper and the shop fitout designed and constructed by the Jam Factory timber artisans.
