(in association with Perumal Pedavoli)

Since its establishment the Adelaide Women’s Prison (AWP) had been developed randomly, which had compromised the functionality of the current facility. Grieve Gillett Architects (GGA) worked with Perumal Pedavoli Architects to prepare a
Masterplan for the Prison.

Integral to the initial stages of this master plan was the development of a new 20 Bed High Security Accommodation Unit. AWP is the only prison in South Australia to provide cellular accommodation for female prisoners.

The new accommodation unit was constructed using mixed construction methods - traditional and modular using shipping containers. A temporary ‘construction’ sallyport through the existing secured perimeter and fence was constructed to provide a dedicated access for the contractors. The unit accommodates 20 single cells, associated day rooms, external caged exercise yards, officer station, staff amenities, interview room, programs room, medical consult room, treatment room and urinalysis area.

GGA worked cooperatively and consistently with the contractor to deliver the project despite construction challenges and programme extensions.
