In 2018, Grieve Gillett Andersen were engaged by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure as Lead Professional Services Contractor (Architecture) to work with the Department for Education on the design of a new Visual Arts, Food Technology and English facility.

Grieve Gillett Andersen received two Commendation awards at the Learning Environments Australasia SA/NT Chapter Awards on 25 September, 2019 for our recent projects Loreto College Staff Facilities and St Mary's Corner.

For the renovation/modernisation of an existing facility, the jury stated that “the Loreto College Staff Facilities project provided a sophisticated, light filled staff area which respects the presence and historical continuity of surrounding buildings.

Another exciting milestone as the finishing touches to the Pembroke School Middle School Redevelopment 'Jin' Bridge were lifted into place this week.

​

The purple steel shroud prefabricated and installed by Specialisted Solutions floats out of the Jacaranda canopies that line Shipsters Road. This completes the final stage of the building works, which connects and provides the main entry from the building to the school's main Kings campus via a new landing, accessible lift and external staircase.

This week Pembroke School began teaching in the new Middle School Art, Science and Technology building. The building has been designed around a “vertical village” concept and we were pleased to see it all in action on the first day of term.

The Middle School journey began in 2015 when an usually shaped parcel of land became available across the road from the Middle School campus. The site and its location demanded a rigorous design and development process – straddling two council areas and interacting with a residential conservation zone.

Beyond their achievements in the field of architecture and design, team members Adam Sickerdich, Esther Chew and David McLeod each gained individual and team success recently in golf, rowing and marathon running.

​

Adam competed with the Tea Tree Gully Golf Club at the Volkswagen Scramble Championship Finals (25-27 May) held at Twin Water Golf Club on the Sunshine Coast. Meanwhile, Esther completed her first full Marathon at the Adelaide Marathon Festival, and Dave won gold and silver at the Australian Masters Rowing National Titles in Perth.

As a part of the Festival of Architecture and Design and in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Architects (SA Chapter), Grieve Gillett Andersen created an interactive display in the Lion Arts precinct outside Nexus Arts Centre.

Words inspired by home, design and Adelaide were printed onto polycarbonate panels supplied by Revolution Roofing to produce an interactive display that invited the community and Festival goers to construct selected words into serendipitous poetic phrases that may inspire new understandings about place, semiotics and design.

Adelaide Hills winery Bird in Hand has unveiled plans in InDaily and the SA Business Journal for a new cellar door redevelopment at their Woodside property. 

We are beyond excited to be working with Bird In Hand Winery on this benchmark project with Enoki Pty Ltd, Hugo Michell Gallery and Virginia Kennett Garden Design. The design team has developed a vision that fully integrates architecture, interior design, contemporary art curation, wine and food to create an immersive sensory visitor experience.

The 2019 South Australian Architecture Awards were announced at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Saturday 29 July, and we are proud to have received three awards and the People's Choice for The City of Adelaide Prize.

The program saw a large number of innovative learning environments entered and we were delighted that St Mary's Corner received both an Award for Educational Architecture, along with the People's Choice award in the City of Adelaide Prize.

This month we have reached an exciting milestone on the Pembroke Middle School Redevelopment, with the 30m long x 4.6m wide pedestrian bridge successfully installed over Shipsters Road, providing a safe connection for staff and students across at First Floor level.  Over the next few months, the bridge will receive some extra design treatment so watch this space!

Inside the Middle School building, things are vividly taking shape. Construction is moving quickly to enable students to occupy in the third term of the year.

On the back of the redevelopment of Copper Coast Sports & Leisure Centre in Kadina and multi-purpose sports court in the new Veritas Centre at St Mary’s College, we have been working with the City of Adelaide, Adelaide and Burnside district hockey clubs and Netball SA to design two sports pavilions in Josie Agius Park / Wikaparntu Wirra (Park 22).

Through an open and transparent consultation process with multiple stakeholders, the result is a conceptual design that is contemporary and contextual, whilst it delivers on the functional requirements of each stakeholder group.

Caitlin completed her Master of Architecture in 2018 at Uni SA and was awards the Hodgkison Graduate Prize in Architecture as a result of her hard work during her final year of study. 

​

Throughout her time at university, Caitlin showed interest in graphic communication, travel and residential architecture while also taking on various community and leadership roles. Her interest in housing was further cultivated by her employment at a small residential building design office for two and a half years before joining the Grieve Gillett Andersen team in February.

Two temporary architectural installations designed and constructed by Grieve Gillett Andersen with JamFactory have been nominated in the 2019 Australian Interior Design Awards for innovation in installation design.

The similar but conceptually different installations integrated an exhibition display of the latest in contemporary Australian craft and design, together with a pop-up wine tasting bar, and both utilised recyclable cardboard in the form of packing boxes and cylinder tubes to transform an everyday product into bespoke elegant design.

From a state-of-the-art gym pavilion at Hilton Adelaide overlooking Victoria Square to the landmark development that is now known as St Mary’s Corner, six new projects have been nominated for the annual South Australian Architecture Awards. 

The refurbishment of staff facilities at Loreto College within the iconic State Heritage-listed Acacias building and a major reconfiguration of the Mary Ward building that has helped to drive a new education and learning direction for the College will be considered for awards in interior architecture and heritage.

As we welcome in 2019, we are pleased to have Charlotte Standish join the team this year, after recently graduating in Interior Architecture at the University of SA. Charlotte talked about her design approach in the graduate exhibition catalogue as always designing with people in mind, and finds the atmosphere of a space essential to the way it is occupied.

Last year, Charlotte also received the Gold Award in Built Environment at the 2018 Design Institute of Australia SA/NT Awards for her Studio 7 project ‘agora’.
